In June 2024, Minecraft added a new enchantment for the mace weapon called Density in the 1.21 release of the game.

The new enchantment was called Density, and it was designed to amplify the attack damage of the mace. The addition of this enchantment can be seen as Minecraft’s answer to user complaints about the uselessness of the weapon.

But what does Density do in Minecraft? How great is its damage, and what are the ways to get it on your mace? This detailed guide answers everything.

Bonus: At the end, I'll also tell you about a get-paid-to platform, Scrambly, that allows you to earn real money by playing mobile games.

What is Density in Minecraft?

Density is one of nine enchantments for mace melee weapon in Minecraft.

Targeting and dropping on an enemy from a height while carrying a Density-enchanted mace can deal exponential damage to the point that the enemy can die in one hit. Attacking an enemy by falling on them is called a smash attack. Here’s a demonstration of it using a mace.

The exact damage a Density-enchanted mace can deliver depends on two factors: the height of the fall and the enchantment level of Density.

Density has five levels, and the first level delivers 0.5 damage per block fallen.

So, if you deliver a smash attack from a height of 3 blocks with level 1 Density enchantment, you’ll deliver 1.5 (0.5 per block x 3 blocks) damage to the enemy.

Let’s learn what does Density do in Minecraft with all its five levels.

Levels of the Density Enchantment

As I mentioned earlier, you can upgrade your mace’s Density enchantment up to five levels.

The first level Density enchantment deals 0.5 damage per block fallen. This per block damage increases as you upgrade the level of the Density enchantment.

Here’s the damage per block fallen for all five levels of Density enchantment.

Density LevelDamage Per Block Fallen
I0.5 (or 0.25 heart)
II1 (or 0.5 heart)
III1.5 (or 0.75 heart)
IV2 (or 1 heart)
V2.5 (or 1.25 heart)

The question now is how to get the Density enchantment in Minecraft and then upgrade its levels. Here’s how.

How to Get the Density Enchantment in Minecraft?

You can apply the Density enchantment to a mace using an enchanting table or an enchanted book via an anvil.

Here’s how the two methods work.

Applying Density Using an Enchanting Table

For an enchanting table to give you Density, it needs to be set up in a special way.

Place an enchanting table, then surround it with bookshelves one block away from the table. One side of the enchanting table should remain empty for you to access and use the table. The enchanting table will be drawing powers from all the books around it to craft Density on your mace.

You’ll only need 15 bookshelves. Don’t stack more in hopes of getting better enchantments. You’ll only be wasting your time.

Now open the enchantment table and put a mace and 1-3 lapis lazuli in the two slots.

Press any of the three options from the left based on the number of lapis lazuli you used. This will enchant your mace in any of the enchantments for mace. So you might have to try with a few maces before you get the Density enchantment.

Anvil and Enchanted Book Method

First craft an anvil using three blocks of iron and 4 iron ingots. This will take a total 31 iron ingots.

Then open the anvil’s GUI and place an unenchanted mace and a Density enchanted book of any level in the empty slots. You’ll get a mace with the same level of Density as the enchanted book.

The method seems easy. The only hard part is arranging a Density enchanted book. There are a few ways to get an enchanted book:

  • Trade with a librarian of any level.

  • Fishing. There’s a 0.8% chance of catching an enchanted book through fishing.

  • Ominous vault. The loot of an ominous vault can contain an enchanted book at a 5.5% chance.

Can You Put Breach and Density on a mace?

No, a mace cannot have both Breach and Density enchantments because they are two mutually exclusive enchantments for mace.

Other enchantments that cannot go with Density together on a mace include:

  • Sharpness
  • Smite
  • Bane of Arthropods

However, you can still bypass this restriction by typing commands in the console.

All other mace enchantments like Wind Burst, Fire Aspect, Unbreaking, Mending, and Curse of Vanishing are compatible with Density.
